A Lifetime of Inspiration! Happy 80th Liv / Peter Robson (fellow sailor )
The following is a short excerpt from my editorial comment in the January 2008 issue of Pacific Yachting:
"The offshore adventure stories of Liv Kennedy, the Roths, the Pardys and others carried me beyond racing. Their stories planted the seeds of offshore travel and inspired fantasies of the South Pacific: endless sandy beaches, tropical lagoons, palm trees and, best of all, topless Tahitian women in grass skirts. When I was old enough, I followed in the wake of my heroes and racked up offshore miles as crew and skipper, and as a boat bum in Florida and the Caribbean. Wherever I was, I’d try to hunt down copies of Pacific Yachting—mainly to read Liv Kennedy’s column about B.C. cruisers in various parts of the world; occasionally, Liv would even include a note about my adventures."
How true Liv! And I owe you, at least in part, for me being here in the editor's chair at PY. I don't think you could ever know the extent to which you inspired readers of Pacific Yachting to go cruising, or count those to whom you provided invaluable advice from your own adventures. We've never been able to replace you!
I remember the first time we met at the Knight's home in Kerrisdale, prior to our sailing to Hawaii (my first offshore voyage) on Chaika and how, at 17, I was awed to be in the presence of someone who had accomplished so much. Over the years you continued to inspire me and were always available to offer words of wisdom regarding my offshore adventures.
I still haven't made it to Tahiti to see those topless women, but I can't blame that on you!
Warmest regards,
Peter Robson
